Elementary School

Students in elementary school begin their education fully immersed in the arts and academic curriculum.

Every student in kindergarten through fourth participates in five, one  hour-long arts classes and one STEM lab in a 6 day rotation.  Our goal is for each child to have the opportunity to engage the performing arts, visual art, language learning and hands on experiences in the sciences. Students in grades kindergarten through fifth also have daily science with their classroom teachers.

Starting in fifth grade,  students select two majors based on their own individual passions, skills, and interests in the arts or STEM.  Fifth grade students have five hours of their major class each week and continue with their French language learning.  All elementary school students have the opportunity to participate in performances that showcase their artistic growth and accomplishments.

Technology is also a key component of our curriculum. Each student in each grade is issued a personal iPad. All students are able to access literacy, math, and all learning activities in all subjects both in school and at home.

Our English Language Arts, (ELA) program, Wonders, is a standards-based literacy program that supports young students as they develop skills for reading both literature and informational texts.  We supplement our ELA program in grades kindergarten through second with a daily lesson in Fundations, a structured language program that helps students learn and strengthen skills in phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, high frequency word recognition, spelling, and reading fluency.

Our Math program, Eureka Math, is the most widely used math curriculum in the United States.  The curriculum is designed to enable students to do more math and less memorizing.  The students learn the language of mathematics, practice skills, and develop their capacity to reason mathematically with the goal of preparing them for algebra and more complex mathematics with an emphasis problem solving.  Parents interested in having their students fully comprehend mathematics will appreciate the deep learning Eureka Math provides.

The engaging elementary school curriculum is designed to provide students with an effective program of academics, deliver a joyful experience in the performing and visual arts, prepare them for intensive language learning, and engage them in hands-on STEM education.

The curriculum at Philadelphia Performing Arts is aligned with the Pennsylvania’s Standards Aligned System (SAS), http://www.pdesas.org/, and the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards, www.corestandards.org
